Olde r 911s have an empty receptacle with a lid – behind the fuel tank and next the steering rack, if I remember correctly – which would house the optional Eberspächer petrol heater, if fitted; newer 911s may have some a/c componentry there.
That more or less hidden space is called “the smuggler’s box”, for obvious reasons.
